The Search for Cross-Platform Desktop GUI Toolstack: The Research

Author: ceefour | Filed under: Opinions, Ruby

Recently I’ve skimmed and read through literally hundreds of web sites just to find out the “best” cross-platform toolstack/toolkits/development environment for Desktop GUI applications. Of course, no single size fits all. But personally, the most interesting one being the offering from the Java platform (duh!). I’m looking forward to develop JRuby Swing apps in there! (it’s possible, but I’m not sure if that’s practically good solution at this point)

A MindMap of lots of thoughts:

Maybe you’re pushing yourself too hard :)

Cross platform means we need an extra layer (VMs, runtimes, whatever). So, a true cross-platform is never exist. Two different operating system don’t work the same way, so is the application(s) on top of them.

From the way I see it, a cross platform GUI application is just an illusion of these extra layer.

Ever considered Macromedia/Adobe Flash? I’ve heard Flash is evolving into a fearsome beast now.

Other tools that you might be interested in maybe Oracle Developer. Well of course, if Oracle is only our option. Oracle Form and Report run virtually anywhere, both web-based (using OC4J or IAS) and desktop GUI application.

But, the single point of truth is, why we need a true cross platform GUI application? What for? Why? There are always prices we have to pay.
