What You Need to Do When Setting Up A Web Site / Changing Theme / Visual Styles
Author: ceefour | Filed under: Beginner, Rails, Web 2.0There are times when you want to set up a new site. There are also times when you already have a site but you’re not currently happy about how it looks and want to apply a new theme/visual style (and I’m not talking about just replacing one .css file).
There are several things you may want to check:
- Your pages’ title
- Your pages’ keywords & description (META tags)
- Your pages’ character encoding (both in META tag and the one sent by web server)
- Check all images/stylesheets work and not missing
- Make sure all your sidebars/widgets are loaded
- Test the search function
- Check Google AdSense / other banners
- Check your Google Analytics / Crazy Egg code
- Make sure your RSS feeds work
- Make sure RSS auto-discovery works
- If you use FeedBurner, make sure auto-discovery and other feed links point to your FeedBurner’s feeds, not your original feeds
- If you have breadcrumbs/hidden text/anything SEO (Search Engine Optimization), put them back in
- Click Print Preview to make sure your pages display fine in print
- Use the browser’s text resizing feature to make sure your theme does it well
